| Barton Banned For 12 Games
Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton faced an FA hearing today and has been given a 12 match suspension...
Following Joey Barton's tumultuous training ground bust up with then team-mate Ousmane Dabo of Manchester City on the 1st of May 2007 the now Newcastle United midfielder has been hit with an FA ban.
Dabo, a French international, was suffered several blows by Barton and had to receive hospital treatment to his beaten head, together with a suspected detached retina.
Manchester City dealt with the incident by fining Joey Barton £100,000 and the player had to serve an in-house suspension.
A statement on the FA's official website today read: "At an independent Regulatory Commission hearing today, Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton was given a 12 match suspension, six matches of which are suspended until the end of the 2009-2010 season, and fined £25,000."
Six matches of his sentence will be served with immediate effect. Upon his return to football, if the player is found to be involved with anymore on-pitch fracas then he will be handed a further six game ban.
Maurice Armstrong Chairman of the Independent Regulatory Commission also added from a further statement: "The Commission members considered principally the serious attack by Mr Barton that cannot be accepted... The members also had to take into consideration the sanctions imposed by the courts and the pro-active support Mr Barton has received from Newcastle United FC and other professional bodies."
He continued: "The Commission members wanted to punish the offence appropriately but give Mr Barton an opportunity to ensure his professional conduct does not falter again and ensure he is fully aware of the consequences should he make another serious error of judgement."
The 26-year old has only managed two minutes of professional football so far this season, at the Emirates Stadium versus Arsenal. He made a substitute appearance on the 89th minute and was heavily booed. Within seconds he made a hard tackle on Samir Nasri and won the ball. Nasri was booked moments later for tripping Barton in an off-the-ball incident. It is reported that a large majority of the French camp hold grudges against Barton for his treatment of Dabo. | |
