| Messi In Miami?
FC Barcelona have had preliminary talks with the MLS about expanding their empire to the United States with the creation of a sister team in Miami, Florida.
According to reports from major Latino-American television station, Univision, steps are being made by La Liga outfit Barcelona to expand their reach to the US by creating a sister team in Miami. The team would be named something along the lines of ‘Barcelona USA.’
Barça president, Joan Laporta apparently travelled to Miami to meet with MLS officials and several local businessmen to discuss the prospect of creating the team in the near future, with no exact timetable in place as of yet.
They wish to follow the path that Mexican power house Chivas paved when they expanded to the MLS by creating Chivas USA back in 2004.
The Blaugrana have always had a good rapport in the States as they frequently play pre-season tours here. Such is their strong popularity among soccer fans in this country that a move such as this would not be totally out of the ordinary. Bringing such a famous and powerful club into the fold could only benefit the MLS and speculation about when it could happen is already widespread.
One of the most successful European clubs of all-time, Barcelona stumbled out of the blocks in their first La Liga match this season losing 1-0 to recently promoted CD Numancia, a result that stunned the country’s football fans. | |
