But the euphoria of sneaking through to the Champions League group stages will now give way to anxiety as the Merseyside club face up to Gerrard's enforced absence.

The Huyton-born superstar is scheduled to undergo surgery on his troublesome groin today and will be out of action for the next fortnight.

As such, the 28-year-old is certain to miss England's upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Croatia. He may also be forced to sit out Liverpool's September 13 clash against Manchester United.

The news comes as a huge blow to Reds boss Rafael Benitez, who had only just welcomed Olympic duo Javier Mascherano and Lucas Leiva back into his midfield.

"I am disappointed for Steven. We knew he had a problem when he joined up with England for their last match. But he said he would play through the pain tonight," the Spaniard told the press.

"It is only a minor operation but we are looking at 10 to 15 days out."

waw that's a huge blow 4 Liverpool , he wont be out for long but missin Man utd game is quiet enough.

well to be honest they didn't stand a chance in that game any way with the performance of standerdlang and middles brough they would be lucky if they concede less than they did in there last old trafford visit

but Man utd aint havin a good start either n r sufferin major absences not 2 mention Ronaldo bein out which is 50% of their team.

why dont u talk about the year b4 that when Milan the 4th beat Man utd 3-0 n then beat u in the final 2-1
and what about last season when the 2nd in Serie A Roma beat Spain's 2 years champions Real Madrid.

each game has it's certain circumstances
and u know that if it wasnt 4 the 2 red cards Inter got n Cordoba's injury and the other list of injured player u would have never beat u on both legs at least.

well last time Inter n Bayern played each other was a month ago n as far as i can remember we beat u in Allianz Arena
