A Clean Sheet

Liverpool vice-captain Jamie Carragher this week deemed it “unthinkable” for the club not to qualify for the Champions League this season. The European competition has, in the recent years of relatively little domestic glory, been the club’s saving grace. Liverpool, though, will need to raise their game, having being outplayed by the industrious Belgian side two weeks ago, if they are to avoid the catastrophe of a premature exit. Liverpool have their penalty expert goalkeeper Pepe Reina and the linesman, who deemed ruled Marouane Fellaini’s effort not to have crossed the line, to thank for the draw they achieved in Belgium.

Following the final whistle, Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez breathed a sigh of relief and admitted that the only positive thing to be taken from the first leg was the clean sheet. Liverpool will still enter the game firm favourites, but will now know that their opposition will be no pushover.

A Good Start, Just

Since the last encounter, Liverpool have enjoyed their finest start to a season under Benitez - two wins in two games. However, their performances have been far from convincing. Both games have been won by late goals and they look far from being in full-swing. However, one cannt be overly harsh. After all, it is the start of the season and other sides, including Chelsea and Arsenal, have also scraped victories against inferior sides without being castigated in the same way Liverpool have. With the home crowd behind them and a squad strengthened by the return of midfield dynamo Javier Mascherano and pacy young Dutchman Ryan Babel, Liverpool will remain strong favourites to progress.

All or Nothing

A club of Liverpool’s size and stature are unable to contemplate missing out on Champions League football. This will be evident tomorrow night, when they will plot a route past the Belgian side cautiously. On the other hand, Standard Liege, who have no real expectations of European football, will simply be aiming to give Liverpool another tough ride and will play accordingly.

Jamie Carragher certainly recognises that Standard Liege are capable of causing an upset, telling the club's website that, “you have to remember they'd gone something like 30 games unbeaten in their own league and are a club with European pedigree.” Liverpool may have made a perfect start, in terms of results, to the Premier League season, but Liege have won their last two domestic games in much more convincing style. Having scored six goals in two matches, Liege are likely to play with a confidence to match their grit. Carragher will urge his teammates to raise their standard against Liege.

TEAM NEWS

Liverpool

With the return of Javier Mascherano and Ryan Babel from the Olympics, several new options are available to Liverpool. Whether he will employ either player, changing tactics that have produced two league victories, remains to be seen. Benitez, in the longer term, could revert to the 4-2-3-1 formation that served him well last season. If he does do this, it would be likely that Mascherano and Alonso would line up behind an attacking trio of Steven Gerrard, Robbie Keane and one of Babel, Dirk Kuyt or Yossi Benayoun. Fernando Torres would inevitably lead the line.

However, it is unlikely that Benitez will change things around that much for a must-win game and thus Liverpool are expected to line up similarly to how they did against Middlesbrough. Who Benitez will favour to partner Jamie Carragher in central defence is difficult to predict. Martin Skrtel, Sami Hyppia and Dan Agger will all be in direct competition for this spot. Gerrard is still rumoured to be carrying a slight groin problem but is likely to play. He will be probably be hooked as soon as possible, though, if and when Liverpool are comfortable.

Possible Starting XI: Reina – Dossena, Carragher, Skrtel, Arbeloa – Kuyt, Gerrard, Mascherano/Alonso, Benayoun – Keane, Torres.

Standard Liege

Following an impressive display last time round, Standard Liege should be expected to field a very similar line up to that which started the first leg. As long as there are no knocks still being carried from the comprehensive 3-0 league victory over KVC Westerlo at the weekend, the same side is likely to be fielded.

Possible starting XI: Aragon - Dante, Dalmat, Defour, Mbokani - De Camargo, Mikulic, Camozzato, Sarr, Fellaini, Witsel.

PLAYERS TO WATCH:

Liverpool

Somewhat predictably, the Liverpool dangermen are likely to be Torres and Gerrard. Torres scored the winner late on against Sunderland and Gerrard clinched victory even later against Middlesbrough. Both these players are capable of single-handedly putting the game beyond Liege. Robbie Keane's partnership with Torres, meanwhile, appears to be gelling.

Standard Liege

Marouane Fellaini will feel aggrieved not to have been on the scoresheet last time round and will be no doubt looking to make his mark this time. Igor De Camargo repeatedly threatened Liverpool two weeks ago and will merit closer attention from the Liverpool defence.

PREDICTION

Liverpool can, quite literally, not afford to lose this game. As such, they should field a strong side which should be enough to see off the plucky Belgium side. Standard Liege will struggle to dictate the game at Anfield quite like they did on home soil. If Torres and Gerrard are both firing, Liverpool are likely to be too much for the Belgians.

Having seen how Standard Liege set themselves out in the first leg, it is difficult to see them being blown away at Anfield. With an enhanced squad, two wins under their belt and home advantage, Liverpool should go through by a couple of goals.

Player Ratings: Liverpool 1-0 Standard Liege AET

A distinctly underwhelming display from Liverpool was rescued by the Dutch pairing of Ryan Babel and Dirk Kuyt in the death throes of this UEFA Champions League qualifier against the Belgian champions. Goal.com analyses the contributions of the participants...

Liverpool:

Pepe Reina: 9.0 - Invaluable to Liverpool with another string of game-saving stops. His contribution is worth as much as Kuyt’s. Two matches, two shut-outs - flawless.

Alvaro Arbeloa: 7.5 - Better going forward than defending but growing steadily into the role vacated by Steve Finnan. He offers more of an impetus than the Irishman and is a committed, effective performer. Witsel did not have it all his own way on the flank tonight.

Fabio Aurelio: 6.5 - His inclusion was perhaps a surprise but he coped well. Aurelio held the ball well and was efficient in possession. Dalmat gave both he and Dossena a tough time defensively.

Martin Skrtel: 8.0 - A tough customer - Gave Dieumerci Mbokani very little comfort on the ball. He tackled and headed well. He was perhaps out of position once or twice however.

Jamie Carragher: 7.5 - Par for the course from the committed Scouser. His heart is as big as Anfield and he demonstrated the kind of resilience and determination that typifies his Liverpool career.

Xabi Alonso: 6.0 - Looked assured when he was on the ball but did not chase possession enough. Tidy and efficient in his distribution, but the game passed him by for large chunks.

Steven Gerrard: 7.0 - Did not exert the type of influence expected of him at times but was nonetheless to the fore. Looked determined going in both directions. Perhaps he needs to invest in a new pair of shooting boots however.

Dirk Kuyt: 8.0 - His goal could be worth as much as £25million to the club. Flourished when Keane and Benayoun were withdrawn. He has a tendency to be ignored as an attacking entity when on the wing but forced his way into proceedings with a few shots. His contribution to Liverpool in Europe is vital to Rafa Benitez.

Yossi Benayoun: 6.0 - Easy to forget that he was playing. Not his type of game. Liverpool need urgency and pace on the flanks and all too often, the Israeli looked for a little pass or to run inside.

Robbie Keane: 6.0 - Needs a goal and needs one fast. The harder he tries the more desperate he looks. If he forgot about the elusive strike on target and played to his strengths, he would cut a far more relaxed figure. Links well with those around him but needs to calm himself.

Fernando Torres: 7.0 - Not the most effective evening from El Niño. He made some inspiring runs but was afforded little space by Sarr and Onyewu.

Subs:

Damien Plessis: n/a

Nabil El Zhar: 7.0 - Gave Dante a few frights and earned the Brazilian a booking. Has jet-heels but needs a final product. Perhaps should have had a penalty.

Ryan Babel: 6.5 - His cross was inch perfect but came very late. He made no considerable impact before the assist but that will all be forgotten now.

Standard Liege:

Rorys Aragon Espinoza - 8.0 - Had little chance with Kuyt’s goal but did well besides. Looked occasionally butter-fingered but offers a relatively secure last line of defence. Excellent shot-stopper.

Marco Camozzato: 6.5 - Looked tired as the game wore on and was slow to react to Babel’s cross. Had the game finished within 90 minutes, he would have registered an 8.

Dante Bonfim Costa: 6.0 - Jaded as the contest wore on and was forced into untidy errors during extra-time. The change in tack by Benitez meant he had to deal with faster and more mobile wingers in the added 30 minutes.

Oguchi Onyewu: 7.5 - A near flawless display from the big American. He and Sarr have a remarkable understanding as a partnership. He tackles well and competes honestly.

Mohamad Sarr: 7.5 - Like his partner, Sarr is a formidable prospect for attackers and he rarely gave Torres the opportunity to relax. A tight marker and decent challenger.

Steven Defour: 8.0 - A tireless midfielder with good ball usage. Epitomised the work ethic that makes this Liege side such an effective unit.

Maroune Fallaini: 6.0 - Not as prominent as he was in the first leg. Struggled at times to exert his considerable influence. Had one decent first-half opportunity.

Axel Witzel: 6.0 - He was given a tough ride by Arbeloa and Kuyt. He did not have the opportunity to force his way into the game high up the pitch. Nevertheless, he was always available.

Wilfried Dalmat: 7.5 - Expended all his energy over the two legs. A clinical crosser and accurate passer. He also proved tonight to be good all-rounder with some decent tracking-back and tackling.

Dieumerci Mbokani: 8.0 - Could be one of the biggest prospects in the African game. He is blessed with silky skill as well as pace and power.

Igor De Camargo: 6.5 - Wasteful with the half-chances that came his way. He has a tendency to be hurried in front of goal at this level. He could do with improving his awareness.

Subs:

Salim Toema: n/a - Struggled to have an influence and to adapt to the pace of the game.

Milan Jovanovic: 6.0 - Boloni would have wanted a bigger contribution from the Serb. Did not force Carragher or Skrtel into discomfort.

Liverpool couldn't score in 180 minutes plus 28 more in Extra time against a team like Standard and this tells the whole story , i dont need 2 comment of no performance or any other stuff but 208 minutes without a single goal against a team like Standard.

i didnt watch the 1st leg but i watched 2day's match let me say 2nd half plus extra time n rly no real chances were made by the reds 2 be mentioned and it is hard 2 say that Liverpool with their attackin force of Torres-Keane with the help of Gerrard , Kuyt , Benayoun , Xabi Alonso n Babel with Nabil El Zhar when came in , all these stars n yet found it so difficult 2 break Standard's defence.

what else can i say

has it been 2 minutes more b4 that goal n gone 2 Penalties we could have seen The reds wave good bye 2 the CL from the Qualifications round n that's what i could have called humiliatin.
