According to reports emanating from Spain, Espanyol winger Albert Riera is set to complete his move to Liverpool today.

El Mundo Deportivo has reported that Catalan outfit Espanyol have reached an agreement with Premiership giants Liverpool for the sale of winger Albert Riera.

The deal is believed to be worth €9 million upfront, plus €3 million based on the player’s performance, totalling the €12 million that Espanyol were holding out for.

Both clubs are now working on the finer details of the transfer and once it is completed, the 26 year old will fly out to Merseyside to pen a four year contract with the option of a fifth.

Espanyol president Daniel Sánchez Llibre revealed that the Blanc-i-Blau will have to dish out 30% of the transfer fee from the sale to Girondins Bordeaux as part of the agreement when the winger joined the Catalan side from the French outfit.

Llibre has also assured that the club have already begun looking for Riera’s replacement and a possible option is River Plate’s Olympic gold medallist, Diego Bounanotte. The 20 year old would only cost Los Periquitos around the region of €4 million and El Mundo believes that both parties have already made contact to begin negotiations.

WELL MAYBE HE SEES SOMETHING IN HIM.
BECAUSE WE CANNOT DISAGREE THAT BENITEZ IS ONE OF THE BEST MANAGERS IN THE WORLD AND EACH YEAR HE COMES UP WITH ONE OR TWO SIGNINGS WHICH SEEM STRANGE BUT BY THE TIME BECOME USEFUL.

Liverpool Agree Riera Deal With Espanyol

Liverpool have beaten off the challenge of neighbours Everton to sign Albert Riera from Espanyol after negotiations were concluded over a deal late on Monday evening.

Rafa Benítez was keen to tie up a deal for a left-side player after being told that the club would not fund his bid to prise Gareth Barry away from Aston Villa.

Riera is reported to have told his agent and Espanyol that he would prefer to join Liverpool over Everton at the weekend and now he has had his wish granted.

The Spanish international is believed to have been allowed to leave the Blanc i Blau for a fee in the region of €12.5m and is set to fly to Merseyside to undergo a medical and sign a contract.

It became clear in the middle of last season that Riera would leave the Barcelona-based club this summer after he was left out of the side for long spells by Ernesto Valverde.

That scuppered his chances of maintaining his place in the Spain squad for the European Championships and he was not chosen for the squad that went on to lift the trophy in Austria and Switzerland.

Benítez wil be pleased to have found an answer to his left-sided problems and the signing of the 26-year-old has meant that any interest in Stewart Downing is now over.

Riera rose through the ranks at Real Mallorca before making his first team debut in 2000 and after three seasons he then opted to move to France to play for Girondins Bordeauz.

Two successful campaigns in Ligue 1 ended with the Manacor-born wideman wanting to return to Spain and in 2005 he signed for Espanyol only to then go back out on loan to Manchester City.

A change of coach at the Blanc i Blau saw Riera return to the club and enjoy a run in the side, but last term things took a downward turn when he was left out of the team and now he has a chance to bounce back at Anfield.

Liverpool are on the verge of completing the signing of winger Albert Riera from Espanyol after the Spaniard flew to Merseyside for a medical.

The terms of his transfer have agreed between the two clubs, so now Riera, 26, needs only to satisfy Liverpool’s medics about his fitness for the deal to be finalised.

The fee involved is believed to be some £8million.

The move would see Riera back in the Barclays Premier League and back in the North-West, because he spent a period on loan to Manchester City during the second half of the 2005-06 campaign.

He made 12 League appearances for City, plus three as a substitute, and scored one goal - the first in a 3-0 victory for Stuart Pearce’s side over Newcastle United in February 2006.

Riera earlier opted for Liverpool ahead of their city rivals Everton

Liverpool Close In On Riera

Liverpool are rapidly closing in on Espanyol winger Albert Riera after Reds boss Rafa Benitez confirmed that the player was having a medical with the club.

Liverpool have been on the lookout for a player to give them width down their left-hand side. After failing to sign Gareth Barry from Aston Villa, a deal to take Riera to Anfield is imminent. The fee for the Spanish midfielder is believed to be in the region of £12m, which was accepted by Espanyol yesterday.

Riera already has Premier League experience: a season-long loan spell at Manchester City two years ago, in which he made only 15 league starts, scoring just one goal.

Since then, he has gone from strength to strength at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys. Establishing himself as an integral part of the team, he helped them reach the UEFA Cup final in 2006, in which he scored against fellow La Liga side Sevilla. However, Espanyol lost the final and Riera failed to win a trophy with the club. Thus, he will hope to put that right with a move to Liverpool.

Speaking yesterday, Benitez said, “We are very, very close. The player is coming here. Everybody knows, because Espanyol have put it on their website that he is coming here for a medical. However, he has not signed yet.

“He has experience in the Premier League and that is really important. If everything is okay we can talk about his qualities, but for now we will just say he is the option we are looking at.”
