Bundesliga Preview: Bayern Munich – Hertha Berlin
What: Bundesliga Round 3
Who: Bayern Munich vs. Hertha BSC Berlin
When: Sunday 31st August, 17:00 (CET)
Where: Allianz Arena, Munich
Must-Win
Having drawn in each of their first two matches, Bayern feel that their upcoming Berlin tie is a must-win situation. League performance has not been the only problem for the Munich men: left back Marcell Jansen left the club for Hamburg earlier this week in a sudden and surprising turn of events. Although Jansen’s departure has yet to come under much scrutiny from the mainstream media, there has been word that Jansen had a row with new coach Juergen Klinsmann. Bayern fans will hope that the team once dubbed “FC Hollywood” isn’t returning to its old ways.
To make things worse, Bayern have lost right-winger Hamit Altintop to injury. Altintop will join French internationals Franck Ribery and Willy Sagnol on the sidelines.
On the bright side of things, Bayern have a new right-back in the ranks. As suddenly as Jansen left, Italian international Massimo Oddo arrived from AC Milan and will be available to feature in Sunday’s match. Olympians Breno and Jose Sosa have also returned to the Saebener Strasse with bronze and gold medals, respectively.
Furthermore, Bayern welcome back centre back Martin Demichelis, who has recovered from a muscle tear. Demichelis’ presence in the lineup will allow Klinsmann to play the 3-5-2 formation that was featured in preseason. With Bayern at home in a must-win situation, we can expect to see Klinsmann’s side on constant attack until they gain a commanding lead. The presence of an extra midfielder in place of a defender will surely help Bayern at the offensive end, while having a three-man rearguard will not necessarily leave them weak at the back.
Flak
After a very successful pre- and early season run, Hertha drew last week at home against Armenia Bielefeld. Coach Lucien Favre received a great amount of flak after resting defender Joe Simunic, whose presence he could have used. Hertha welcome back captain Arne Friedrich, who was rested last week, as well as Nigerian Olympian Solomon Okronkwo. While the former is ready for action, the latter has recently been in a feud with the Hertha management, who forced him to return to Berlin rather than allowing him to attend a ceremony in Nigeria. The striker has also been linked to a number of other clubs - including Saturn Moscow - and may have already seen his last appearance for Hertha. That said, Okronkwo will be available should Favre choose to use his services.
While Okronkwo is questionable for tomorrow, new signing Amine Chermiti is a sure omission from the matchday squad. The Tunisian striker left the pitch with a knee injury after just 11 minutes on the pitch against Interblock on Thursday. Strikers Marko Pantelic and Raffael, however, will be available as starters, so Hertha will not be short of a formidable striking contingent.
A trip to the Allianz Arena is never a walk in the park and Sunday’s match will be particularly difficult for the visitors following Bayern’s frustrating performances in the Bundesliga thus far. For Hertha to stand a good chance, they will have to play with exceptional energy. On the defensive end, even the strikers must be available, as the Hertha defense cannot afford to give Bayern space. A lack of space for Bayern may cause frustration and errors. Thus, Hertha must be on the ready to counter quickly.

TEAM NEWS
Bayern
In a shocking turn of events, left back Marcell Jansen left Bayern for Hamburg on Thursday, solidifying Philipp Lahm’s role as a left-sided player while giving Christian Lell temporary job security on the right. The Bavarians will also have to do without long-term absentee Franck Ribery, as well as right-winger Hamit Altintop, who recently aggravated a foot injury sustained in late March.
Howevr, Jose Sosa and Breno have recently rejoined Bayern after respectively earning gold and bronze medals at the Olympics. Finally, influential centre-back Martin Demichelis returns, giving Klinsmann the option of playing with a 3-5-2 formation.
Probable Starting XI: Rensing – van Buyten, Lucio, Demichelis – Lahm, Ze Roberto, Ottl, Borowski, Lell – Podolski, Toni
Hertha Berlin
On Sunday, Hertha welcome back skipper Arne Friedrich, who was rested during Thursday’s 1-0 UEFA Cup victory against Interblock Ljubljana. Fellow defender Joe Simunic also returns, having been rested for last week’s Bielefeld match and served a suspension against Interblock.
Summer signing Amine Chermiti, on the other hand, is a definite loss. The Tunisian international was taken off the pitch on Thursday after just 11 minutes of play against Interblock. The striker is expected to be sidelined for 8-10 weeks due to knee ligament damage.
Solomon Okronkwo has returned to the Berlin squad with an Olympic silver medal in hand. The Nigerian striker will be available, although he has recently been in a quarrel with his team and has been linked to several other teams. Consequentially, Okronkwo may not start against Bayern.
Probable Starting XI: A. Friedrich – von Bergen, Kaka, Simunic, M. Stein – Ebert, Kacar, Lustenberger, Cicero – Raffael, Pantelic
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Bayern - Tim Borowski
The towering German international was arguably Bayern’s best player last week and likely earned himself a starting role after providing a huge boost off the bench. Borowski immediately made his presence felt, playing a free central midfield role that saw him do well on both ends of the pitch. On the offensive end, he provided a few excellent balls and scored the equaliser to save a point for the 10-man Bayern squad.
Hertha Berlin - Raffael
A creative and deep-lying striker, Raffael is just the type of forward Hertha will need tomorrow. The majority of Hertha’s offense will likely come on the break and the Brazilian is the perfect link from end to end. His control on the ball is very good and he will be a threat to score and to set up Pantelic.
PREDICTION
Bayern have had a terrible start to their season, but are too good to see more troubles brought upon them. Hertha will put up a fight, but their fate will not entirely be in their own hands, as an in-form Bayern is almost unbeatable in the Bundesliga. That said, Hertha could take points from this match. If this happens, Bayern may be in severe crisis - a situation that is difficult to fathom for a team whose coach is as good as Klinsmann.
